Packet scheduling with delay and loss differentiation

چکیده
To support quality of service over the Internet, the Differentiated Services model has been proposed recently by the IETF. In the Differentiated Services model, ¤ows with similar QoS requirements are aggregated into classes in order to counter the scalability problem faced by the Integrated Services model. There have been several models proposed for service differentiation. The relative differentiated service model is one among them in which an assurance is given that “higher classes will be better, or at least no worse, than lower classes.” Packet delay and packet loss are two general quality metrics under which the differentiation can take place. In this paper, we propose three schedulers based on the relative differentiated service model, namely, delay only, loss only, and both delay and loss schedulers. To evaluate the performance of the proposed schedulers, we have conducted extensive simulation studies (both per-hop and end-to-end) under uniform and nonuniform traf£c loads. Our simulation studies show that the delay only and loss only schedulers differentiate effectively only in delay and loss, respectively, and the combined delay and loss scheduler differentiates effectively in both delay and loss.

Cross-layer Packet-dependant OFDM Scheduling Based on Proportional Fairness
This paper assumes each user has more than one queue, derives a new packet-dependant proportional fairness power allocation pattern based on the sum of weight capacity and the packet’s priority in users’ queues, and proposes 4 new cross-layer packet-dependant OFDM scheduling schemes based on proportional fairness for heterogeneous classes of traffic. Scenario 1, scenario 2 and scenario 3 lead r...
متن کاملFair bandwidth sharing and delay differentiation: Joint packet scheduling with buffer management
Packet delay and bandwidth are two important metrics for measuring quality of service (QoS) of Internet services. Traditionally, packet delay differentiation and fair bandwidth sharing are studied separately. In this paper, we first propose a generalized model for providing fair bandwidth sharing with delay differentiation, namely FBS-DD, at the same time. It essentially aims to provide multi-d...
متن کاملJoBS: Joint Buffer Management and Scheduling for Differentiated Services
A novel algorithm, called JoBS (Joint Buffer Management and Scheduling), is presented for loss and delay differentiation of traffic classes in a packet network. JoBS has two unique capabilities: (1) JoBS makes scheduling and buffer management decisions in a single step, and (2) JoBS supports both relative and absolute QoS requirements of classes. The JoBS algorithm is presented in terms of the ...
متن کاملDesign and Practical Implementation of a New Markov Model Predictive Controller for Variable Communication Packet Loss in Network Control Systems
The current paper investigates the influence of packet losses in network control systems (NCS’s) using the model predictive control (MPC) strategy. The study focuses on two main network packet losses due to sensor to controller and controller to actuator along the communication paths. A new Markov-based method is employed to recursively estimate the probability of time delay in controller to ac...
متن کاملDelay Differentiation without Rate Tinkering
Link buffering is a key element in packet-switched networks to absorb temporary traffic bursts without excessive dropping. The resulting queuing delay is a critical performance factor. Research on buffer management typically studies differentiated buffer allocation to control forwarding rates or buffer size management to control the overall queuing delay. On the other hand, delay differentiatio...
